Retaining Walls - Doing it yourself

Enhancing your property with landscape walls can be simple enough for an energetic weekend builder or homeowner.  Plan early!  Here is a typical work plan:

  • Plan the layout noting slope and drainage patterns.
  • Prepare the foundation at least 4" deep and 16" wide (or to the size of the units you will be using) along the path of your wall.  Compact the soil and lay in a 2" base of coarse sand or gravel to form a level base.
  • Use landscape fabric and drain tile for better drainage.
  • Install the units according to manufacturer directions clipping them together and brushing the top of each course.
